The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians' casino coming to downtown Cathedral City may be the tribe's smallest gaming facility, but it's a big deal for the area.
The Cathedral City Council approved agreements with the tribe in August regarding the casino that will result in up to $6.5 million over 10 years coming into the city to mitigate impacts of the development.
The land upon which the casino is being built is newly owned by the Agua Caliente tribe. The tribe announced in October that the federal government approved a transfer of the land — which was adjacent to the existing reservation — into trust. Groundbreaking was not far behind, in November.
This will be the tribe's third gaming facility, following those in Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage.
The tribe also has two other large developments underway, including a greatly expanded cultural center expected to open later this year and a 10,000-seat arena opening in fall 2021. Both are coming to downtown Palm Springs.
Here's everything we know — and don't know — about the Cathedral City casino so far.
What we know
- Number of slot machines, types: Up to 500 Class III gaming machines, such as slot machines and roulette, and eight table games
- Size of property: 13-acre lot
- Location: Northwest corner of East Palm Canyon Drive and Date Palm Drive in downtown Cathedral City
- Types of businesses: Casino, restaurants, bars, retail and tribal government office space
- Groundbreaking: November 2019
- Construction: To be completed in one phase
- Number of jobs generated: 556
- Casino hours: 24 hours a day, seven days a week
- New fire station: A new fire station will be built across the street, thanks to $5.5 million from the tribe as part of the 2017 acquisition deal.
- Revenue: The tribe said revenue from the development would be used to 'develop a much needed tribal court system, create a robust tax commission, and to address the growing homelessness problem' on the reservation, according to an environmental impact report.
- Parking: About 1,000 spaces to be added (and, if that is 'not adequate,' a two-story parking deck with 240 additional spaces, according to the environmental impact report)
Joe Wallace, CEO of the Coachella Valley Economic Partnership, congratulated Cathedral City and the tribe in August on reaching an agreement.
'The 556 jobs that the Agua Caliente Casino will create in Cathedral City by opening a new casino will enable many people with an opportunity to seek careers with a stable thriving employer that has always been a good corporate citizen,' Wallace said in a written statement. 'The strategic location with proximity to the downtown shopping district has the capacity to provide an economic stimulus to the offerings that are available while adding to the entertainment options in downtown Cathedral City.'
All of this information can be found in an environmental impact report from the tribe available on the casino website, cathedralcitycasino.com.
What we don't know
- When construction will be complete
- How the casino will impact area businesses
- What restaurants and stores will be in the space
How the casino stacks up
The Cathedral City casino will have about a third of the machines as the Agua Caliente Resort Casino Rancho Mirage, which has 1,450 machines, 48 table games, a live poker room and high-limit games. The Rancho Mirage location also houses The Show, a 2,057-seat entertainment venue.
The new Cathedral City casino will also have fewer machines than the tribe's 132,000-square-foot Agua Caliente Casino Palm Springs, which has about 900 machines.

There are also more machines at casinos owned by other tribes in the area. The Soboba Casino Resort & Hotel has 2,000 slot machines and the Morongo Casino Hotel & Resort has 3,000 slot machines. Additionally, the 30,000-square-foot Augustine Casino has about 750 slot machines and eight card tables.

However, the Cathedral City casino will have a larger footprint than the Augustine Band of Cahuilla Indians' casino, with the 65,000-square-foot gaming facility including retail and restaurants. The Agua Caliente tribe plans to devote another 60,000 square feet to mixed-use development.
Like the tribe's Palm Springs location, the Cathedral City casino will be within walking distance to bars, restaurants and other attractions downtown.
Agua Caliente Job Openings
Cathedral City Mayor Mark Carnevale said the casino would be a 'game changer' for the downtown.
“For more than a decade, the land where the casino will be built has been an eyesore to the community,' Carnevale said previously in a news release.
He said he expected the casino to spawn more interest and development in the area and additional revenue for city services.
This will be the tribe's first casino built off the existing reservation. The tribe purchased the 13-acre lot in 2017, paying $5.5 million to a nonprofit that acts as a developer for downtown Cathedral City.
