Subject: BALLY PROGRESSIVE JACKPOT ISSUE

I have a Bally In The Money 5 line Slot with a single progressive jackpot. The game was manufactured in 2004. I purchased about a year ago and it has worked fine. I am much more of a Pinball guy and can fix those very easily. However, I am new to Slots. After purchasing the game I went online and bought the ProSlot 6000 manuals and clear chips. About a month ago my battery started to go. I purchased a new one online and installed. Using the clear chips,I was able to get my game operating again. All except the progressive. I went into diagnostics and then to progressive settings and saw that it was now off. The manual then gives 8 different options for turning it back on. So my first problem is that I don't know what all of the different initials mean and don't know which one to choose. I tried experimenting with the different numbers and ended up having to use my clear chips again. I also believe that after turning on one of the options that I then need to use the reset key, but I'm not sure. I don't want to reset the amount, just turn it back on. I appreciate any help that you can give me.

It seems as though you have a good handle on what is going on with your machine. In casinos they often have their own unique or a mixture of progressive setups. There should be a small computer interface between the progressive and the machine. This interface is what controls the progressive. The most common are CDS and Mikon although there are many. It should be located in the top box and have the ribbon running in to it. The controllers usually talk to the machine with rs232 or rs485. Hopefully it is a well known controller and is not some ambiguous interface.

Perhaps I don't understand. When I installed the new battery and used the clear chips to reset the game, the Progrssive turned off. I went in to diagnostics, which is 11D on this game, and then to option 2, which is Progressive type. There are 9 options listed in the manual, 0 - 8. After resetting it was at 0 - Off - lockup for awarding prizes. The other options are;
1. SPL - Serial Progressive Link
2. PPL - Parallel Progressive Link
3. MAPS - Multi Area Progressive System
4. S/MPI - Serial Multiplex Progressive Interface
5. MPI - Multiplex Progressive Interface
6. SAS - Progressive V3.XX
7. OTT - Over The Top
8. SAS - Progressive V4.XX
I have read all of the terms in the glossary of my manual, but still cannot figure out which number I should choose. I realize that in Casinos there are games in a bank and connected to each other. Also some games may be linked to games in another Casino. I just have this one game. As always, any help is much appreciated.

Some progressives are linked and some are stand alone like your game. In the casino I work at we use SAS V3 which is rs232 or serial some use the newer SAS V4 which is rs485 or USB. As in the casinos yours may be different it all depends on the controller setup. Progressives can be a real pain and often have people who know one type well such as Mikon and others that know CDS well. The main thing is to identify which progressive type that you have which should be in the top box or close by the display.
Basically what you are looking at right now is the interface protocol that the machine should use to talk to the progressive. You could tell by following the progressive controller which will have an interface wire. For example in the casino I work at rs232 is the old serial interface used by computers we still use it because we have such old controllers. It will usually say on the slot machine MPU or on the schematics were the rs232 interface is so we plug the controller into the MPU have whoever is best with that type of controller set it up and set the slot machine to SAS.
Don’t get too frustrated with the progressive they can be a real pain. The fact that you keychiped a Bally game is a good job.

I hope I was clear but basically most progressives have their own computer separate from the slot machine called a controller that runs the progressive. Slot machine themselves don’t have the necessary hardware to run a progressive so another computer or controller is put into slot machine then interfaced into the machine. Everyone is always trying to get into the progressives business with their own protocols, hardware and setup. But the most common are CDS or Mikohn controllers.

Okay, now you are teaching me some things. To be honest, I have never been up in the progressive box until this morning. Took me 10 minutes to figure out how to get the glass off. Anyway, I have a Mikon controller. Then I pulled out the manual and the MPU board. Based on the alighnment of the jumpers JW8 and JW9, my machine is setup to use the RS-232 interface. I do not have a manual for the Mikon equipment, but I hope that i've provided you with enough new information to give me a good guess about my next step. Again, I appreciate you getting me this far.

The Mikon controller should be displaying something to the display even when it is not hooked up to the slot machine. The slot machine just sends a signal to the controller that a coin had been entered into the machine. The controller does everything else from controlling incrementing to providing the output for the display. Mikon controllers often give out error codes like C1 or C2 which can be looked up. There are different types of Mikon controllers such as Con 1, Con2 and the super controller which is used mainly on link type games. If nothing is going to the display I would look at is it getting power, unplugging and plugging back in these controllers often fix display problems. And for some reason sometimes disconnecting the ribbon cable from the display itself and reconnecting it sometimes fixes a display problem.
Some controllers can be set up with a complicated thing with buttons but most people use an older laptop with an rs232 connection and a program that allows access to the progressive setting themselves such as the amount of the progressive and how much it should increment. Most people never touch this because people get fired if it gets set wrong.
The main thing is that the controller should be displaying something even if it is completely disconnected and outside the machine. Such as a error code or the progressive amount. Once the progressive is working the slot machine will only send a signal to it to tell it a coin has been inserted and to increment by the set amount.

Yes, the progressive display works fine. It just does not acknowledge a coin being bet. Prior to the battery going bad, it was adding one cent for each 25 cent bet. I just need the Slot to tell the Progressive to add that penny and then I can testthat the jackpot works based on test information in my manual

Ok the display is up that good then I would think that SAS V3 would work. It may be another such as SAS V4, SPL or PPL. Hopefully it is the SAS V3 of course the testing would be the monotonous part to see if it increments. The only other thing would be the cable coming from the controller to the Motherboard if it is not connected good then no signal would go through.
In a casino I would look at another machine to see what it is set at, unfortunately you don’t have that option but I think you can find out which protocol it is using with a little trial and error.

My game is working 100% again!! I had gone up to my basement yesterday afternoon, (I live in South Florida, so I had to put my basement on the second floor), and tried your suggestions in the order you gave them. Turns out option #6 - V3.XX, is not on my game. Went to the remaining 3 options, but nothing worked. So for giggles I tried option # 5 - MPI. That was the one. When I tested it, a penny was added to the Jackpot. However, my three reels were all spinning backward and forward randomly. Shut it down and re-booted. Same thing. Tried everything i could think of and then used my clear chips again. The game then gave me a reel tilt. tried clearing again and finally got the Slot portion to work properly. Went back into option # 2, and set at MPI again. This time no issues. Game works great and my progessive is working again.
I appreciate everything you did to help me with this issue. I have learned a lot more about my game and Slots in general. Thank you so much!!

I have Mikon controller that increments only every 35 coins (Nickels) entered is it possible to change this so it increments faster?

Yes it is possible but the program needed to interface with the controller would be needed.

Bally Model & Serial Number Identification
Bally maintains a history file on all Walk-Ins it sends to the field. These files date back into the 1960's. This information will need to be provided to Bally anytime you require assistance relating to a specific installation. The location of the ID Tag is on the inside door-frame, next to the vapor-proof light fixture. With these numbers, we can accurately identify your particular Walk-In.

1. Bally Serial Number Information

A Bally Serial number identifies the year the Bally Walk-In was manufactured. This information is useful in determining correct model parts, as many parts have evolved in design over the years. The Serial number is required to determine warranty coverage. If you ever need assistance, your Serial number allows the Bally Representative to quickly find information. Serial numbers also help you quickly identify a correct part out of our Parts Manual.
