Back in the 1980s, you probably played upright video game machines from legendary games developer Konami. Konami’s best-known games over the years include titles like Metal Gear, Frogger, and Castlevania. However, one of the company's most famous game developers isn't known for any of these games. The developer in question is Kazuhisa Hashimoto. He died on 26 February 2020, aged 61. Hashimoto is most known for the game Gradius. More specifically, he is known for a piece of code that became part of Gradius. That code, the Konami Code, is now part of gaming history. The Konami Code Gradius is a side-scrolling shooter that was first released in an arcade format in 1985. In some arcades at the time, it was called Nemesis. The game was popular, but it was also incredibly difficult. In fact, it was so difficult the developers, including Hashimoto, struggled during the process to port Gradius to the NES home gaming console. The biggest difficulty was testing, so Hashimoto came up with a solution. The solution is now known as the Konami Code. It was a button sequence that developers could use while playing the game for testing purposes that automatically gave all the items that you normally needed to spend time unlocking. This included extra lives and other things that made Gradius significantly easier to play. The code was only supposed to be used for testing purposes, but the small team of developers working on porting Gradius to the NES forgot about it. So, it ended up part of the game bought by NES owners the world over. The sequence of buttons was created by Hashimoto to be easy for the developers to remember but hard to do accidentally. However, and it's not clear how, the existence of the code became public. Given how difficult it was to play Gradius, everyone started to use it. However, that's not where the story ends as the code has since been deliberately included in a number of other Konami games. It is also now part of popular culture and can be used on some websites and modern games created by other developers. So, Kazuhisa Hashimoto created, albeit accidentally, something that is now part of gaming folklore and which is still used and remembered three decades later.
